HISTORY OF FAIRHAVEN DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS

Fairhaven, Massachusetts

In 2008, a group of concerned adults came together to establish the Fairhaven Dollars for Scholars chapter.  The founding members were Milton George, Myra Lopes, Douglas Medeiros, David Poyant and Daniel Waltz.  As teachers, active community members and local business executives, they shared the same profound idea of Dr. Irving Fradkin, the founder of Dollars for Scholars, that all students deserve an opportunity to go to college regardless of their financial status.  Dr. Fradkin visited one of their initial meetings and detailed the process of setting up the program.  Since that point in 2008, the chapter has grown, the members remain committed and the chapter continues to raise funds in order to award scholarships every year to graduating seniors.

Today students are selected by a chapter member committee comprising a cross-section of our community. Scholarships are awarded to students based on academic merit and financial need, and who meet the scholarship criteria.
